Overview
Widefind, a 2016 spin-out from LTU's robotics research, specializes in indoor positioning technology similar to that in car keys. Initially exploring various applications, they found the mining industry the most promising for their technology.
With support from Norrlandsnavet, they focused on enhancing automation and safety in underground mining. After being acquired by Mobilaris Industrial Solutions, Widefind continues to develop advanced positioning and safety systems for shared use between autonomous machines and humans.
Highlights
Designing for resilience: Crafting a weather-resistant antenna housing for mining environments through innovative material selection and prototyping
The project involved developing a durable housing solution for WideFind’s antennas at LKAB, aimed at withstanding extreme mining conditions. Through material analysis and stakeholder interviews, key insights were gathered to guide the design process. This included 3D modeling, prototyping, and iterative testing to refine the solution. The result was a weather-resistant housing made from high-durability materials, featuring an efficient fastening system tailored to LKAB’s needs. The design met performance criteria, received positive feedback, and is expected to extend antenna lifespan in harsh environments. Reflection highlighted the importance of user-centered design and material choice, with future steps focusing on further material testing and optimizing the fastening system for quicker installation.
